The people have spoken: China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has topped 10 million followers on Weibo.
“Dasiheichusihai,” the official MPS account, is the first government account to accumulate such a massive number of Weibo fans, the Ministry bragged on August 28.
Literally translated, “Dasiheichusihai” means “cracking down on criminal activities.” The account primarily focuses on issues related to food and drug safety, environmental protection, new political reforms and major incidents, such as the February knife attack in Yunnan.
“The success of the account is a reflection of people’s concern about food and drug safety and their support to our work in cracking down illegal activities,” Meng Jianzhu, Chinese Security Chief said.
Meng urged all judicial and law enforcement agencies to work at creating more influential accounts on Sina Weibo and WeChat.
This report follows rumors that the iPhone 6 will be released sometime September 2014 (analysts claim China’s MPS has allegedly pre-ordered 123456789^2 phones after officials learned how popular they were), and news that hundreds of WeChat accounts have been shut down or temporarily disabled by Tencent, the online messaging app’s parent company.
Accounts featuring disturbing messages of ethnic unity, spread rumors or were pornographic were part of the crackdown, according to a statement released by the State Information Office. Forty-six mass-publication accounts were permanently shut down and another 311 temporarily disabled.
Friday’s notice described these accounts as “the first batch,” hinting that more accounts will be identified, punished and suspended.
