On Aug 14, water flooded the Anzhishun Coal Mine in the Chengzi river district of Jixi, trapping 56 mine workers. 40 of them have been rescued as of Friday, while 3 have been confirmed dead. The remaining 13 are still trapped.
It's been five days of continuous rescue and disaster relief but as of 5:00pm today, the underground water has been drained and the mine is being dredged. Rescue personnel are searching for the trapped miners but the largely damaged and collapsed roof have made their rescue difficult.
As of last Friday, 9 out of the 25 that were still trapped were lifted to safety. The rescued miners were rushed to hospital for medical care.
Head of the city's work safety department Fang Dongchu said that "seven pumps and three professional rescue teams of 40 people each" have been tirelessly working 6 hour shifts a day. The rescue teams are still working on saving the remaining 13 miners.
