A woman from Jiangsu's Shuyang county who got married and divorced 26 times has now found herself stuck in sticky situation. However, her legal battle's got nothing to do with China's marriage law, but is concerned with the government's family planning policy.
Meng Tian, 40, recently discovered she was with impregnated by her ex-husband Luo Lin (8th husband), and left her then-husband to remarry the father of her unborn child. However, when she went to register the baby, the family planning authorities informed her that Luo already had two children with his ex-wife lawfully under his name, and wasn't entitled to register another one.
Meng feared her child would have no legal father and returned to the husband she abandoned weeks ago. The childless husband welcomed her with open arms and was thrilled to be a father.
Reports say Meng has had 9 husbands, 6 of whom she has married and divorced multiple times. When asked about her reasons for the divorces, she cited alcohol abuse, domestic violence or just "too useless." Her longest marriage only lasted three years.
The government has also said that the much-married Meng may be charged with bigamy if she doesn't divorce the father of her child. Faced with the decision to abort or remarry, Meng decided to go with her favorite pastime: she is expected to remarry the childless man soon.
