A recent survey conducted to determine the top 10 safest countries in the world saw East Asian nations (or renegade provinces and territories, if you ask Beijing) like Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea all coming out on top — in fact, China seems to be pretty much the only country in the region not cutting it!
After all, what would you expect in a country where 6 men cram on a bike and get away with a slap on the wrist, where more pollution is seen as a smog solution and where the earth is quite literally opening up?
Taking crime rate as the most important factor, the survey used statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and came the following conclusion:
10. Singapore
Ranked the 7th cleanest city in the world, it also has one of the world’s best healthcare infrastructures and has been lauded for its low crime levels and nonexistence of political violence (perhaps a product of stringent restrictions on free spech and assembly that've earned it the moniker "Disneyland with a death penalty").
9. Bahrain
A safe shelter for people wanting to escape from persecution, Bahrain offers ultimate freedom to its residents, which is something you will not find in its regional neighbors.
8. Georgia
With 98% of Georgians saying they feel 100% safe in their home country, it’s a wonder they didn’t clock in even higher. Maybe something to do with th likelihood of being invaded by Russia.
7. Luxembourg
This picturesque landscape says it all really...
6. Malta
With low criminal activity, no terrorist attacks and barely a single natural disaster to date, Malta takes the sixth safest slot. (And if its natural disasters that count, we definitely don’t stand a chance over here in China!)
5. United Arab Emirates
Even with terrorist threats from al-Qai’da the United Arab Emirates still manages to come in fifth for its low crime rate!
4. South Korea
Violent street offences are very rare and natural disasters pose little threat in South Korea. In fact, the only volcanic eruption ever recorded was at Mount Baekdusan, which was took place more than hundred years back.
3. Hong Kong
In this 24/7 society that boasts an omnipresent police force, citizens fail to feel threatened in Hong Kong — but with huge dog-eating pythons to worry about, things may not be quite as safe as they seem!
2. Taiwan
Seen as the second-safest country thanks to a "friendly and tenderhearted" population that wouldn’t dream of killing a fly (or at least not without the sweetest of intentions) — READ: Taiwanese man commits “nice” stabbing.
1. Japan
With the second longest-life expectancy in the world (thanks to a league of untraceable centurions that must be alive if their families are still claiming pension benefits), Japan also takes the trophy for safest society. The country claims first prize on account of a culture that would quite literally rather die of embarrassment than bring shame to their country — a mindset that might explain their nearly nonexistent homicide rate yet horrifically high suicide count.
