After celebrating his 60th birthday on April 7, Hong Kong martial arts legend Jackie Chan received a particularly personal present from a young Malaysian artist.
28 year old "Red" Hong Yi constructed a model of the superstar using 64,000 disposable chopsticks. Describing herself as a painter without a paintbrush, Hong gave careful thought for which material to use for the piece.
"I finally decided on chopsticks – a symbol of the Chinese culture. Jackie has used chopsticks during his kung fu scenes in a few movies like The Fearless Hyena and The Karate Kid," Hong explained in a video on YouTube.
The artist spent a month gradually building her collection of chopsticks cafes, stalls and factories in Zhejiang and Beijing before undertaking the painstaking task of tying them together.
She used bamboo chopsticks to show that disposable materials "can be reused and made into something else more meaningful and beautiful."
Hong was able to personally present her gift to Chan at his birthday concert in Beijing on Monday, and the actor even made a cameo in her YouTube video.
