The Beijing Metro system is planning to implement facial recognition technology in order to make traveling smoother for passengers. The new measure was announced at the 2019 Urban Rail Transit Operation Development Forum, held in the capital at the end of October. It’s still unclear when these measures will be rolled out, however.
The introduction of facial recognition technology will aim to take some of the strain off of Beijing’s subway system, which sees an average of 12.3 million passengers using the underground system each day, according to China Daily.
The multi-channel security check and facial recognition technology is expected to better manage passenger flow, as well as improve safety and transport efficiency. The new system will first classify passengers into groups, allowing staff to implement different relevant security measures. However, it is, as yet, not clear what criteria will be used to classify the passengers.
Additionally, security databases are planned that will be able to identify forbidden objects entering metro stations.
Plans are also underway to expand the technology to other transportation systems. Earlier this month it was announced that the Beijing Public Transport Group is looking to build an intelligent bus system, which will provide passengers with real-time data of the number of people on each bus.
