"Ni hao, y’all" exclaimed Ellen after announcing that her daytime chat show will air in China. The Ellen DeGeneres Show will be the first US show of its kind to be broadcast in China. The 11th season of Ellen can now be video-streamed on demand on Sohu.com, 48 hours after it airs in the United States.
Charles Zhang, chairman of Sohu told the SCMP, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show is one of the most well-known talk shows in the US and we believe it could also have strong appeal and relevance with the Chinese audience.”
“It’s basically the same show, but it’ll have subtitles and it will be called the Happy Lady Dance Hour,” Ellen said.
Chinese netizens responded with excitement to the news, saying they had previously had to “climb the firewall” to watch the Emmy award-winning show and others remarked on the reasons behind the show's import to China: mainly that it "isn't that political".
Jeffrey Schlesinger, president of worldwide television distribution at Warner Brothers, said the “family-friendly” DeGeneres had “clearly differentiated herself and her talk show from so many of the controversial conflict-oriented talk shows as it has become an increasingly positive alternative in daytime”.
However, DeGeneres hasn't always shied away from controversy. In the past, she has criticised the card company Hallmark for homophobia and challenged fashion label Abercrombie and Fitch on their values of body image.
