In late July, Foshan police tracked down five foreign teachers who were working illegally in China. The instructors were teaching at an English training center inside a shopping mall near Qiandeng lake in Nanhai district.

According to Foshan Daily, all five teachers did not have a proper work permit; the local newspaper also noted that the teachers’ nationalities were from Eastern and Southern Europe as well as Africa.

Each foreign teacher was fined RMB5,000 and their visas were made null and void as a result of the case. As for the training center, Nanhai police sub-bureau slapped them with a RMB50,000 fine and is holding the person in charge of the center legally responsible. No other details of the investigation have been made public, as of press time.

While reports note that the foreign teachers’ visas were canceled, it’s not clear what measures are being taken by the local government in repatriating the illegal workers.

According to a Weibo post by the Beijing Public Security Bureau in mid-July, there are three ways in which foreigners can be repatriated from China: 1) leaving the country by a certain deadline, 2) deportation or 3) expulsion.
