A number of artists living in Luomahu art district in Beijing have been evicted from their studios as demolition in the area began on the evening of July 10, according to The Art Newspaper. Notices for the eviction were reportedly circulated in June.

Images of demolished buildings in the Luomahu art district have made the rounds online, with local media reporting that the demolition was because illegal structures had been built and altered in the area.

Elsewhere, police moved in the Huantie art district and posted eviction notices on Sunday, July 7. Tenants have been given just seven days to move out of the area. Notices posted in Huantie attribute the evictions to a renewed effort by authorities to crack down on gang crime in the area.

According to quotes collected by The Art Newspaper, police are not allowing express deliveries or food deliveries in or out of the area.

This certainly isn’t the first art district to be demolished at the drop of a hat in Beijing. Last year, artists in Caochangdi were abruptly forced out of the area as authorities begun demolition on buildings due to the construction of illegal structures.
