This summer, the China State Railway Group is expecting around 720 million passenger trips over the two-month period from the beginning of July to the end of August. With an average of over 11.6 million passenger trips each day, the figure is 8.1% higher than last summer’s passenger trip total.
The state-owned enterprise will also be adding a new fleet of Fuxing high-speed trains (which have a design speed of 350km/h) to aid with the high passenger volume, according to China Daily. The additional trains will also help shorten travel time by 25 minutes for passengers riding from Hami to Urumqi along the Lanzhou-Urumqi line.
China’s high-speed railway network is, by and large, the most extensive on the globe. According to Railway Technology, the first high-speed railway track (reaching a top speed of 350km/h) in the PRC was officially launched back in August 2008, linking Beijing to Tianjin in roughly 30 minutes. Now with a bevy of railway construction projects underway, China’s high-speed network is expected to grow faster and longer, reaching a total length over 30,000 kilometers in the near future.
