On Saturday, June 15, a car plunged from the cliffs above a popular Guangzhou swimming hole in Baiyun district, killing one person. The incident happened sometime during the afternoon or early evening.
That’s visited the small lake – which is a flooded stone quarry, to the best of our knowledge – on Sunday. When we arrived at shortly after noon, police had cordoned off the area and were turning away the crowds of weekend swimmers.

When asked by That’s why the swimming hole – which we previously profiled in our Daytripper series – was closed, a police officer told us that there would be no swimming “under any circumstances” due to a car accident the night before. Officers at the scene added that they had just pulled the car and one body from the lake and that the swimming ban was to allow authorities to collect further evidence.

When pressed as to how the car ended up in the lake in the first place, one police officer told us that the driver and sole occupant of the car had attempted to park at the edge of one of the higher cliffs. Somehow, the vehicle ended up going over the cliff’s edge and crashing into the water.
That’s was able to obtain video footage of the aftermath, which clearly shows a red sedan half submerged in the lake. Watch below (VPN off):
Some people we spoke with had decided to make the best of their foiled swimming trip and had set up a barbecue next to a muddy puddle down the road from the inaccessible lake. Others indicated that they planned to hang around until 6pm, when the police officers at the scene allegedly finished their shift, to enjoy a short evening swim before the sun went down.
