Whoops! Porn Surprises Diners at Wuhan Hot Pot Restaurant

We like to think that Haidilao is a family-friendly restaurant, capable of serving both your geriatric grandmother and your teething toddler. Their brand philosophy is, after all, to deliver “a healthy hot pot culture to food lovers around the world.” Unfortunately, one of Haidilao’s Wuhan locations recently landed in hot water after risque, mature content (read: porn) played on one of the restaurant’s TV screens.

According to a Weibo post from Headline News, one of the restaurant’s monitors abruptly began showing a pornographic video on January 5. The scene apparently resulted in some understandable embarrassment for Haidilao’s staff.

According to Haidilao, the eatery’s televisions are intended to display the restaurant’s hygiene rating and provide a direct video link to the kitchen, so that diners are able to watch their food being prepared.

Once the televised sexcapades were noticed, a waiter quickly switched the monitor off. It’s unclear how long the porn was on the screen for, but according to Chutian Metropolis Daily, the incident happened at roughly 3pm.

When a reporter visited the restaurant at around 7pm (peak dining time) on the same day, the screen was reportedly still switched off.

In the wake of the steamy incident, Haidilao is conducting an investigation into how the NSFW footage ended up on the restaurant’s TV.

Netizens sounded off on the ‘yellow’ footage (the Chinese word for yellow, huangse, is often used to describe sexual or racy content), with many finding the whole incident comical. One Weibo user wrote, “Maybe they broadcasted the video because one of the customers wanted to see it.” Another pondered about the possibility that “a customer may have mirror displayed their phone onto the Haidilao’s TV screen.”
