On December 6, the Department of Ecology and Environment of Guangdong Province published the results of the 2017 Guangdong Province Environmental Protection Responsibility Assessment. The inspection focused on organizational leadership, environmental conditions, amount of pollution and environmental protection facilities, among other factors. The central government’s environmental protection inspector also provided feedback to cities on how to combat pollution.

Compared with the 2016 Guangdong Province Environmental Protection Responsibility Assessment, four cities fell from ‘outstanding’ to ‘favorable,’ including Huizhou, Zhongshan, Yangjiang and Maoming.
As for Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the two metropolises both finished as ‘favorable’ cities. But, Shenzhen has had Guangzhou’s number as of late, ranking higher than the Guangdong provincial capital in a list of the best Chinese cities for business as well as being named a top travel destination by Lonely Planet.
