A lot has been said domestically about China’s electronic music revolution in recent years. As such, you might ask whether the world-at-large has also noticed this growing musical trend. Well according to DJ Mag’s list of 2018’s top 100 DJs, China ain’t no slouch.
The list is largely populated by European and American DJs, but their Chinese counterparts have also carved out a couple of spots amongst the world’s best-known electronic musicians to call their own.
Unsurprisingly, the two Chinese artists who made the list come from Shanghai, arguably the party capital of the country at present. Carta and DJ L landed at No. 73 and No. 84 respectively, with both musicians climbing from their previous year's ranking, with Carta rising 19 spots, and DJ L jumping 14 positions.

Of the two, DJ L’s music is characterized by DJ Mag as “big room, progressive house,” whilst Carta’s music is “mainly house, but also a bit of everything really.”
DJ L first made an appearance on this list last year, when he ranked at No. 98. He has toured all over the globe in the year since, with his hard work clearly paying off this year. DJ L spends his down-time off tour at Shanghai's own MYST nightclub (which also landed at No. 41 DJ Mag's top 100 nightclubs of the year.)
Carta, on the other hand, currently resides in Hong Kong. At just 22 years old, and already sitting comfortably above the Fragrant Harbor’s bright lights, he looks set to be torching stadiums for a long time to come.
DJ Mag’s list of artists is by no means exhaustive. The top three positions went to Martin Garrix, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Hardwell – all of whom are firmly positioned within the realm of EDM.
Many of the artists featured on the list, including Garrix, Armin Van Buuren and Diplo, will appear at Creamfields in Hong Kong this December. You can find tickets for that event here.
