Medical magic happens in Guangzhou. There was the rare crane that received a titanium beak, after the upper portion of its bill was destroyed in a bird fight. And, of course, the man who received a cutting-edge robotic hand after losing all four limbs in an explosion. And who could forget the brave surgeons that removed a half-meter-long eel from a man’s ass in Baiyun?

As further testament to Guangzhou’s status as a revolutionary medical hub, the first-ever spinal surgery by a robot was recently completed in Guangzhou, according to a report by eguangzhou.gov.cn.

The procedure took place at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, where the robot – dubbed Dr. Ou – performed a two-hour operation on a patient’s spine. The procedure was led by Shen Yonghui.

According to the report, Dr. Ou is able to plot screw paths and insert needles into a patient’s spine.

With the remarkable Dr. Ou behind the knife, the recent spinal surgery was shortened by one hour and the patient enjoyed an 80 percent reduction in X-ray exposure.
