In a whirlwind series of crackdowns across Guangdong, the province’s public security department has shuttered over 650 online platforms related to ‘cyber pornography,’ according to a report by GDToday. Authorities were also able to freeze assets worth a staggering RMB20 million that were related to online porn.

Cities involved in the bust include Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, among others, according to the report.

As stated by the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, the channels used to access ‘yellow’ content (in Chinese the color yellow is often used to refer to pornographic content) are generally “video or live streaming apps.”

Back in February of this year, according to GDToday, Shenzhen Police discovered that netizens had been downloading and using an app called ‘Wangwang Webcast.’ The program was an amalgamation of sorts, allowing users to watch porn and participate in real-time gambling.

In response to Wangwang Webcast, provincial police began an investigation into the app and were able to apprehend over 20 individuals.

In case you didn’t know, pornographic content is no joke in China. Under Chinese law, you can enjoy a not-so-glorious fixed-term prison stay of three years – or more – for creating, disseminating or duplicating obscene content with the intent of generating a profit, according to GDToday. If porn is circulated to youth under 18 years of age, the punishment will be even more severe.

Despite the legal status of yellow content in China, it’s been estimated that China accounts for close to 30 percent of the world’s porn consumption. By comparison, the United States accounts for only 14 percent.
