A woman in South China has made international headlines this week after video and images of her entering a baggage X-ray machine at a railway station security check surfaced online.
According to BBC, the incident happened Sunday at Dongguan Railway Station. The woman allegedly entered the machine to guard her handbag, which she initially tried to carry through a body scanner before being told that all bags must go through the X-ray device.
While the woman complied and placed her bag on the conveyor belt, she strangely decided to accompany her bag through the security machine. The woman presumably received a blast of radiation on her trip inside the X-ray machine, but other than that, she emerged unharmed on the other end of the conveyor.
Bizarre, neon images captured by the X-ray machine show the woman – with her skeleton visible – stooping behind her baggage.
Railway station employees are now reminding travelers that the radiation produced by X-ray scanners could be dangerous and that it's unwise to enter the machines.
Why the woman was so worried about parting with her purse is not immediately clear, but BBC notes that many Chinese people travel with large sums of cash when heading home for the Spring Festival.
The woman was just one of a projected 136 million Spring Festival travelers commuting through Guangdong province over the CNY travel rush, otherwise known as chunyun. Chunyun is the world's largest annual human migration and this year’s travel rush is projected to run until March 12.
