Weibo has temporarily suspended some of its popular features after coming under fire from China's internet watchdog for spreading "harmful content."
In a statement released over the weekend, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) blasted the Twitter-like microblogging platform for failing to censor "illegal information" posted by some of its millions of users.
"Content containing wrong public opinion orientation, obscenity, low taste, and ethnic discrimination continued to spread on Sina Weibo," the statement read. "The problems were serious. Sina Weibo has violated the country's laws and regulations, led online public opinion in the wrong direction and left a very bad influence."
In response to the statement, Weibo accepted the criticism and announced it would be temporarily suspending some of its major services for a week. Among the shut down services is the "hot searches" page, which displays the social networking platform's top trending topics.
Weibo has at least 376 million monthly active users worldwide, according to its 2017 third quarter reports.
