It’s been a busy month for the folks at the Guangzhou Wildlife Conservation Management Office, who have been responding to concerned residents of a Liwan District apartment complex that's been overrun with venomous juvenile snakes.

According to Guangzhou Daily, a property management official with Poly Garden Jiuli said sightings of newborn cobras and many-banded kraits, both highly venomous, began on August 31 and have continued ever since.

Yesterday morning alone, authorities received over a dozen calls regarding baby snakes in Poly Garden Jiuli.

“After the discovery of the snakes, we are very worried,” a resident of the apartment complex told reporters. “You now see no one walking downstairs in the garden and at night, [residents] do not dare go to the courier box, [they're] afraid of snake bites.”

‘Snake experts’ were dispatched to search out and capture the juvenile serpents, which were found in zones D and E of the apartment complex. Snake repellents and ‘cages’ were also set up to either deter the animals or catch them, although, as of September 20, no snakes had been caught in the cages.

So far this month, experts have been able to capture 20 snakes in Poly Garden Jiuli. However, how many of the animals were cobras and how many were kraits has not yet been reported.

Mr. Chi of the Guangzhou Wildlife Conservation Management Office is quoted by Guangzhou Daily as stating that snakes are active in Guangzhou from March until November, with egg laying occurring between July and September. From November or December till the end of February or beginning of March, snakes hibernate.

So what should you do if you see a snake? According to snake expert Li Wei, get the hell away from it and do not try to kill it. If you discover you have a snake near your home, you can call the police or the Guangzhou Wildlife Conservation Management office (020-8376-7695) for help.
