On the morning of July 23, a cleaning lady surnamed Zhao made a saddening discovery in a trash bin near a Vienna Hotel in Longgang District, Shenzhen: a newborn baby wrapped in a reddish-pink plastic bag.

The frightened infant was squirming and making ‘cat-like’ crying noises, according to Southern Metropolis Daily, which drew Zhao's attention. Once removed from the garbage receptacle, it was clear the baby girl had recently been born, as she still had bloodstains and even part of the umbilical cord attached to her stomach.

Police arrived on the scene and transported the baby to the Longgang District Central Hospital, where, thankfully, medical staff concluded the newborn was in good health and had 'no apparent defects.'

The baby, which doctors estimated was about a day old at the time of discovery, is being cared for at the hospital. The incident is currently under investigation, with police trying to determine if the child was deliberately abandoned.
