CSL powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande appear set to face punitive action for team captain Zheng Zhi’s behavior following a 4-3 loss to Tianjin Quanjian on Sunday.

After the match, Zheng gathered his players to shake hands with the opposing team, but members of the Guangzhou squad failed to offer handshakes to match officials, as per league rules.

Evergrande said they have conducted an investigation into the incident and fined Zheng RMB100,000. According to a statement released by the club, the midfielder “failed to meet the high standard required by the club management to perform a leading role.”

The statement also added that “all coaches and players are required to respect their opponent and referees during the match.”

In addition to Zheng’s monetary penalty, Evergrande manager Chen Guanning received a salary cut.

Sunday’s defeat was Evergrande’s second of the season and the first time they’ve conceded four goals in the CSL since 2011. While still leading the league with 37 points, the club is now only one point ahead of rivals Shanghai SIPG.

A statement on possible penalties for Evergrande is expected soon by the CSL’s governing body, according to the South China Morning Post.
