Most have heard the story of the RMS Titanic, a timeless tragedy of 1912 in which the giant ship, bound for New York, had its journey cut short by an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. If this doesn’t strike a chord, perhaps the image of a dreamy eyed Leonardo DiCaprio bidding farewell to his beloved Kate Winslet, before sinking to an icy death, is a little closer to your heart.
Regardless, you won’t want to miss the massive Titanic exhibition held at Guangzhou’s esteemed Guangdong Museum, which will run until October 15.
According to ForexTV, the exhibition is hosted by Premier Exhibitions, Inc. and is said to be one of the biggest in the company’s history.
Over 300 artifacts are displayed across 20,000 square feet of space, with, for the first time ever, recreations of rooms that you would have seen on the ship over 100 years ago.
The Minister of State Administration of Cultural Heritage, as well as members of the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province, are to thank for the exhibition, “which has been an outstanding success across the world,” according to Jun Wei, director of the Guangdong Museum, in an interview with ForexTV.
A step into the exhibition takes you back 105 years, to the day of the Titanic’s maiden voyage in Southampton, England.
You will receive a boarding pass, along with the identity of a former passenger, and will be guided through the life and death of the ill-fated Titanic.
Highlights of the exhibition include 302 artifacts, among them the crow’s nest bell, telegraph, davit pulley, scale replicas of Titanic rooms and amenities, new footage of the Titanic wreck site and a hands-on piece of the ship itself.
“We have already seen thousands of visitors in our opening week,” Guangdong Museum’s deputy director Haiming Xiao told ForexTV, “and it is a testament to the grandeur and universal appeal of this exhibition and story.”
