Field tests of the first 5G base station in China are currently underway in Guangzhou, according to China News.

Located in the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, the 5G test site is reportedly one of seven that will be launched in the area by China Mobile this year.

At a China Mobile conference held in Suzhou on June 8, the state-owned telecommunication giant announced its agenda to test 5G mobile networks in five Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou and Ningbo.

Contrary to popular belief, ‘5G’ is not merely equal to ‘4G plus 1G.’ According to China Mobile, the download speed on a 5G-enabled mobile phone can jump to 10 gigabytes per second, meaning you will be able to download a whole season of Better Call Saul in the blink of an eye. The technology has also been described as being “20 times as fast as current 4G networks.”

China currently leads the world in 5G technology, and has announced it will start rolling out commercial 5G networks as early as 2020.

The industry is expected to contribute RMB6.3 trillion (USD927 billion) to China’s economy by 2030, according to a Caixin Global report.
