3 Arrested for Bridesmaid’s Death in Guangdong

Just a week after two men were arrested for sexually assaulting a bridesmaid in Xi’an, three men in Guangdong have been detained in connection with the death of a bridesmaid during nuptial revelry, according to the Hong Kong Free Press.

The incident, which happened on June 14 in Foshan, occurred after the 22-year-old victim, surnamed Luo, was chased upstairs by a number of groomsmen and then pushed from a fourth-floor balcony.

The tragedy took place during the customary ‘fetching of the bride,’ according to police, a portion of the festivities in which the groom and his groomsmen arrive at the bride’s home to transport her to the location of the wedding service.

“[A]s soon as the door opened, the groomsmen all rushed inside – the bridesmaids went upstairs to hide, and the groomsmen chased them from below. The young people were playing – that girl went up to the top, and fell down,” an elderly wedding guest told the Guangzhou Daily.

Based on numerous reports, as well as a photo of the balcony Luo fell from, the pushing and shoving resulted in the victim falling through the railing, detaching it from the base of the terrace. This aspect of the case likely means one of two things: 1) the balcony is a victim of slapdash construction and thus unsafe, or 2) the bridesmaid was shoved with excessive force.

It could also be a combination of both points. Either way, the photo below raises troubling questions.

Silly games, presents and money-filled red envelopes are regular fixtures during the fetching of the bride, although in more recent times the game portion has come under scrutiny for highly-sexualized and dehumanizing activities aimed at bridesmaids.

The detained groomsmen are 22, 23 and 24 years old and are being held on suspicion of death by negligence. The investigation is ongoing.
