Shanghai's already impressive skyline will soon be enriched with a stunning vertical farm, Inhabitat reports.
The giant farming laboratory, set to be built in Pudong between the airport and downtown area, will serve as an innovation, education and interaction hub.
Sasaki is the US-based architecture firm behind this fascinating project. The one-square-kilometer Sunqiao Urban Agricultural District is set to be one of the first national agricultural zones in China recently approved by the central government.
A feast for the eyes and beneficial for a city with skyrocketing real estate prices, what’s not to like?
The urban farm will spread across several buildings, with platforms boasting floating greenhouses, vertical walls, algae farms and seed libraries.
The incredible project will result in both education and large-scale food production. “This approach actively supports a more sustainable food network while increasing the quality of life in the city through a community program of restaurants, markets, a culinary academy, and pick-your-own experience,” Sasaki says.
Visitors of the urban farm complex can tour around the interactive greenhouse, aquaponics systems and science museum. The venue will also offer family-friendly events and workshops.

Though it’s unclear when Sunqiao will open, Sasaki announced back in October that it was officially selected as the master planner for the project. The innovative project was recently named a finalist in Fast.Co’s 2017 World Changing Ideas Awards.
