An upscale supermarket in Hong Kong (that also has branches in Shanghai) has come under fire for selling individually wrapped strawberries at HKD168 (USD22) a pop, the South China Morning Post reports.
CitySuper's Kotoka strawberries, which come "Fresh by Air From Japan" and are packaged in styrofoam, surrounded by straw and secured in a plastic-covered box, have even inspired a Change.org petition led by Plastic-Free HK calling for the city's supermarkets to stop using excessive amounts of plastic. The petition already has over 8,000 supporters.
Conservation activists claim that the styrofoam socks in particular are damaging to the environment and can be found all over the city's beaches.
“That one heavily packaged strawberry sold in a box in CitySuper reminds me of something out of Mad Max – like it’s the last strawberry on Earth," activist Gary Stokes told the SCMP. "It’s ridiculous."
