By comparison, China had an unusually quiet year. Nonetheless, there were still a few goings-on in the world's most populous country.

In our 2016 Year in Review series, we recap the best (and worst) of China's year in the worlds of technology, social media, sport, fashion, food, arts and more.

Shanghai may not always support their home teams but three of their squads are giving the city a reason to cheer in 2016.

Shanghai SIPG

In their AFC Champions League debut, the young club impressed with a quarter finals finish. However, a third place finish in the China Super League cost coach Sven-Goran Erikkson his job. Andre Villas-Boas will take the hot seat.

Shanghai Shenhua

The city’s oldest football club responded to their rising rivals with their best season in six years. Despite a horror injury to Senegalese striker Demba Ba, the club finished just behind SIPG, meaning both Shanghai teams will play in the AFC Champions League next season.

Shanghai Sharks

After missing the playoffs for the second season in a row, Yao Ming’s squad has turned to former college basketball sensation Jimmer Fredette. While the scorer may have flamed out in the NBA, he’s already dropped a 50-point game in leading the Sharks to the top of the league this season.
