A little less than a year ago, the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee passed a groundbreaking law against domestic violence. The law allows victims to apply for “personal protection” against their abusers. Since the implementation of the law in March, the only people who have been granted personal protection in Beijing have been women.
But all that changed last weekend, after a man was issued protection from a Beijing court after he accused his wife of domestic abuse, China Daily reports.
According to the victim, surnamed Zhang, his wife physically assaulted him for more than six months. The fights started after they married and escalated to physical violence for the first time in May. According to Zhang, the initial beating was so bad he was sent to the hospital. A similar incident occurred just a few days ago, but this time Zhang decided to involve the police.

Using medical records and photographs, Zhang made his case in front of the Mentougou district court. The court ultimately sided with Zhang. Under the law Zhang is now under six months of personal protection. If his wife violates the order she can be fined and even detained, depending on the circumstances.
Zhang filed for divorce last month, but his case was suspended because his wife was still nursing their baby.
