In an ordinary mall in Shenyang, Liaoning, stand three life-size wax figures with the likenesses of some of the world’s most influential leaders: US President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
But one figure in particular, that of Abe, has drawn special notice online due to his Hitler-esque mustache and kowtowing posture. Abe stands roped off, away from his Presidential buddies over on the red carpet.
Behind wax Abe’s wrinkled face is written in Chinese ‘Commemorating the September 18th Incident.’ Also called the Mukden (or Manchurian) Incident, the September 18th Incident refers to the 1931 Japanese invasion of Shenyang. The invasion marked the beginning of Japan’s occupation of Manchuria that lasted until 1934.
Tensions between China and Japan have persisted throughout the 20th and 21st centuries with little sign of abating anytime soon. While Abe has called for improved relations with Beijing, the ongoing territorial dispute over the Diaoyu Islands has tarnished his standing in the eyes of some Chinese.
