Chengdu police found themselves in a rather bizarre situation last week when they detained men dressed as Monkey King for inciting a massive brawl in public.

The police were first notified of the street fight at around 3pm. When they arrived to the scene, they discovered seven fighting men dressed as Sun Wukong, a mythical monkey from the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West

To add to the chaos, all seven men were deaf, so it was difficult to figure out exactly why the fight started in the first place. The police decided to bring in all seven Monkey Kings to the station, also inviting along a sign language instructor to help translate.

From there, they learned that the men were part of two performance groups that juggled and posed for photos with tourists on the streets of Chengdu. That day, the two groups fought over a particular spot of sidewalk that drew a lot of spectators. The turf war fight turned ugly when one of the Monkey Kings hit another in the head with his golden staff, causing him to bleed.

The two sides eventually came to a settlement and the injured Monkey King received RMB1,500 in compensation for medical expenses.
