In a city often derided for having no culture (see the Wikitravel Guangzhou page for reference), some creative artists have taken up the task of beautifying Guangzhou streets – painting a series of different images around Yuexiu.
The sanctioned art project was undertaken by Yuexiu Huanghuagang Science Park through the Creative Industries Association, with seven different animation companies in the region submitting ideas for the graffiti.
The art profiled in this story is located on Yuexiu District’s Taihe Gang Lu, although reports indicate that similar graffiti can also be found on Dasha Tou Lu and Baiyun Lu – the work of students from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.
The content of the art varies greatly, from street posts being turned into half-smoked cigarettes to an electrical box being painted up as an old-school phone booth.
Some of the art is undeniably better than others…
Artistic ‘growth’ on the streets of Guangzhou.
This creative image features a bowl of noodles garnished with various Guangzhou landmarks.
No doubt this painting is a ‘slam dunk.’
If you are in the area and snap your own shots of the street art, remember to tag #thatsprd when you upload them to Instagram for a chance to be featured on our Instragram of the Week.
