The world’s largest amphibian, the Chinese giant salamander, made a rare and unexpected appearance yesterday at Chengdu East Railway Station.
Four of the beastly salamanders were discovered in a trash can, stuffed in a plastic bag, by railway station sanitation workers, according to reports. No word yet on where the prehistoric animals came from or how they ended up in the garbage, but we are sure it is an interesting (read: troubling) story.
The Chinese giant salamander is listed as a critically endangered species and, despite being considered a delicacy by many, its consumption is prohibited. They are often referred to as ‘living fossils,’ due to the fact they date back to the age of dinosaurs.
Despite the giant salamander’s protected status, it has suffered an estimated 80 percent decline in numbers since the 1950s.
Why this person has their shoe on this salamander’s head is beyond us...
