A fugitive who had been on the run for 28 years after killing a 10-year-old boy recently turned himself into police in Jinhua, Zhejiang. In his confession, Fu Mou admitted to killing the boy and blackmailing his family.
According to Netease, the 49-year-old fugitive had spent the last 28 years running from place to place and taking up illegal jobs to evade police, never once contacting his family during that time. Fu said he turned himself in because his guilt made him tired of hiding.
The fugitive confessed to murdering the boy, whose name is being withheld, on August 30, 1988 after the boy was playing outside Fu's house and accidentally walked in. Recognizing the boy as coming from a rich family in the village, the suspect, 21-years-old at the time, decided to kill him and extort his parents for money, an idea he claimed he got from a book he was reading. Fu said that he was desperate for money to build a new house.
After brutally strangling the boy, Fu buried his body under a nearby pigsty. He then sent a ransom note along with the boy’s shoes to the family demanding RMB8,800.
When police showed up to the scene the next day, it was too late. Fu had slipped away in the night and began his 28 years of running. During his time in hiding, Fu lived in many places throughout China, including Xiamen, Tibet, Yunnan, Guizhou, Jiangxi and Anhui.
The confession came as a tragic conclusion for the boy’s family, who believed all along that he was still alive and never stopped their search.
Since the pigsty had been demolished, local police had to send out a special squad and two excavators to search the area. The boy’s remains were recovered last week in Jinhua's Jindong District.
