Hot off a commendable Oscar performance, Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant will soon be mauling its way into Chinese theaters.
The film, which is especially notable due to the hype surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio’s first Oscar win, is a graphic journey of loss and revenge in the brutal frontiers of the early American wild. According to The Hollywood Reporter, China’s state-backed film company (which regulates distribution in the country) is aiming for a March 18 opening.
A Middle Kingdom release for The Revenant is assumingly welcome news for investors, who include Chinese company Alpha Animation and Taiwan-based Catchplay, despite the fact some are predicting it won't resonate with Chinese audiences – whom are more accustomed to Hollywood superhero flicks, mermaids and genetically modified dinosaurs.
To help Chinese filmgoers warm up to the man-vs.-wild adventure-drama, DiCaprio (warmly referred to in China as Xiao Li, or ‘Little Leo’ since Titanic) will be paying a promotional visit to the country, according to Deadline.
Currently, The Revenant has grossed USD404 million worldwide, but this number will undoubtedly swell once released in world’s second-largest film market. Last year, China’s box office grew 49 percent (bringing in a whopping USD6.78 billion) and its expected to top North America as the world’s largest film market sometime next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
