Yang Liu knows a thing or two about cultural comparisons. The Chinese illustrator, who was born and raised in Beijing, moved to Berlin at the age of 13. After living in the German capital for 13 years, Liu began working on a project to document the differences between Eastern and Western culture. The result is these simple posters which compare and contrast certain attitudes and behaviors, with red representing China and blue representing the West.
Since Taschen first published 'East Meets West,' a full book of Liu's posters, in 2007, the illustrations have been wildly popular. When asked whether the illustrations might reinforce stereotypes, Liu told CNN: "It is for us today very important to see more behind the actions being displayed. There are reasons behind all actions and behaviors and they are based on different reasons. I hope to help people to have more interest and [give them a] starting point to communicate."
Here are a few of Liu's comparisons:
1. Talking in restaurants
2. The boss
3. Individuality
4. Dealing with problems
5. Queueing
6. Telling the Truth
7. Getting angry
8. Self-portrayal
9. Transportation
10. Expressing an opinion
