A 19-year-old Chinese student at Arizona State University (ASU) was killed in a shooting after her car collided with the suspect’s car in Arizona last Saturday, according to the Associated Press.
According to the AP, 32-year-old Holly Davis crashed into ASU sophomore Yue Jiang’s car while they were waiting at the red light of an insection in Tempe, Arizona. The local media reported Holly Davis then allegedly got out of her car and fired shots towards Jiang, hitting her several times. After being shot, Jiang then drove her vehicle into another car with a family of five inside. Jiang was then taken to the hospital, where she later died.
According to AP, Tempe police Lieutenant Michael Pooley said Sunday that Holly Davis has been booked on three charges, including one for first-degree murder.
Jiang came to ASU in the fall of 2014 and was a finance major at ASU's W.P. Carey School of Business, according to a university statement (via the Arizona Republic).
Following the incident, gun control has become a major topic of interest among the more than 360,000 Chinese students currently studying at US universities, with some creating guides on how to legally possess and own a gun, according to the Wall Street Journal. One student at ASU went so far as to create a set of Chinese language guidelines, which tells students: "Don’t buy a gun out of panic. Guns are for self-protection, but they may bring you more danger until you truly grasp how to use them. Please look into reading materials about gun safety first."
