Sad news spread across Shenzhen social media on Friday, after a source from Shenzhen Daily confirmed the deaths of two foreign nationals in Shenzhen.
The deceased were identified as Damien Douk (France) and Sean van Niekerk (South Africa). It is reported that Damien was working on a smartwatch in China, while the 23-year-old Sean was in town on an internship. The following message has been left on Sean’s Facebook wall:
At this point, little is known about the circumstances of their deaths, as local police continue to investigate. It is supposed that both men died at the same time and in the same place from a combination of food and alcohol poisoning, according to reports.
While the details remain unknown, alcohol poisoning resulting from over-consumption of counterfeit spirits has been know to cause deaths in China.
We express sincere condolences to the families and friends of both young men.
