If further proof was needed that you shouldn’t mess with middle-aged Chinese women, here’s a video from Xi’an shot by a bemused passerby startled to see a group of about a dozen damas relocating parked cars with the sheer force of their love for guangchangwu, or public square dancing.
VPN and non-VPN videos below:
Local media report that the women had no trouble dispatching the first two offending vehicles – a black BYD car and a small van (mianbao che) – but they had to dig deep to muscle a white Toyota off their dance floor. Perhaps buoyed by the adrenaline rush of success, the toe-tapping ladies still had the energy to put on a show for the crowd that had gathered in humbled/bemused awe.
This certainly isn’t the first time dancing damas have raised eyebrows. While many Chinese complain about the loud music, the pastime has its defenders, notably in the foreign press corps and the Britpop band Blur. In March, news broke that Chinese authorities planned to clamp down on the nationwide phenomenon; it later transpired the crackdown was, fortunately, just a rumor based on a poorly worded press release. However, public square dancing is not kosher in nation’s biggest square, Tian’anmen.
While some witnesses and online commenters criticized the women for disrespecting the car owners’ property, it sounds like the aunties have staked a pretty solid claim to their patch of turf – a local man told reporters that the women had been grooving in the space next to the Sanyao metro station every evening for over half a year.
