When is an RMB100 bill not an RMB100 bill? When a tiny misprint makes it worth 1.5 million yuan, that's when.
A Chongqing man is now an RMB-millionaire after he received an ever-so-slightly botched RMB100 bill. The man, surnamed Zheng, thought little of the misprint when he was first handed the bill three years ago, but decided to hold on to it anyway - it's not every day you get to see ol' Mao sporting the beginnings of a beard.
Zheng nearly spent the bill a few times over the last three years, according to Xinhua, but ultimately kept it in his possession until earlier this year, when he heard of a Guizhou man who sold a similar bill for RMB1 million. That's when Zheng knew he had more on his hands than just a portrait of a poorly shaven Mao Zedong.
He brought the bill to a Chongqing auction house, where there are (apparently) more than a few people willing to throw down some serious coin over botched bills. After experts were able to certify that everything was genuine - a real misprint and a real RMB100 bill in the first place - Zheng's finding sold for RMB1.5 million.
Imagine if it had been a full beard. We assume that all of you are currently rifling through your wallets, searching desperately for screwed up bills.
