When it was casting time for the newly-released Bradley Cooper rom-com Aloha, producers needed to track down a suitable actress for the role of 'Allison Ng,' who, as her names suggests, is of Chinese (Cantonese) descent. And... they went with Emma Stone.
The internet is not pleased.
"In order to process the idea of Stone as a bi-racial character [...] you must first get past the obvious stumbling blocks: her alabaster skin and strawberry blond hair, her emerald eyes and freckles - past the star's outwardly unassailable #Caucasity," laments Entertainment Weekly, and introduces us to a hashtag that, for the moment, is entirely composed of people riffing on the film.

"In [director] Cameron Crowe's Aloha, Hawaii is 99 percent white and Emma Stone is... Asian," says The Daily Beast, which notes that the film has already received flack from Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders for, well, casting only white people for even the Asian roles.
The film opened this weekend to a rocky debut: after receiving what Variety calls "a critical mauling," the flick raked in only USD10 million, or just a wee bit more than director Cameron Crowe's previous disaster We Bought a Zoo.
If it's any consolation, it looks like the race issue is just one of many, many problems in the film. Aloha is currently boasting a mere 18 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
