The dead get walking: 'bizarre dress' and 'horror makeup' banned from Beijing Subway

The walking dead will have to do just that in Beijing after new regulations come into force punishing commuters on the city's subway system who wear "bizarre dress" and "horror makeup."

While the new rules do not explicitly lay out punishments that will be meted out to violators, would-be ghosts, zombies and of course randos wearing watermelons over their heads are warned that those who do not heed warnings will be detained by subway security.

In an incident that may potentially have precipitated the newly announced legislation, last year Shanghai-based pranksters Monkey Kingz were feeling the Halloween spirit and decided to scare some subway passengers with a bloodied zombie costume.

Unfortunately, however, their fellow passengers didn't find the prank quite as funny as they did, and scenes of abject mayhem ensued, followed by a week of administrative detention for one of the jokers.

WATCH: Zombie prank is particularly terrifying when everyone thinks he has ebola

In a prescient note online, Monkey Kingz wrote:  "Maybe it's the Ebola pandemic that's got people on the edge, or perhaps Chinese people think zombies are real. Either way, things escalate..."

If these new regulations are anything to go by, things certainly have escalated - and we're sure Shanghai can expect similar rules to come into force before this year's Halloween or Hungry Ghost Festival (August 28).
