Photos uploaded to Weibo apparently showing cops in Chengdu, Sichuan province beating a beggar's dog to death with a shovel have attracted outrage online.

The two men killing the dog appear to be chengguan, China's much loathed urban management and enforcement officers; jumped up security guards with a reputation for cruelty and violence

Police defended their actions to the Global Times, saying the dog had rabies, but animals rights groups said that the animal had never been tested and cops did not ask its owner whether it was infected.

On Weibo, commenters were scathing in their criticism of both the viciousness and pointlessness of killing the dog. "Fuck the police," one user wrote. "I hope they get the same treatment one day."

Update: We originally erroneously reported that the incident took place in Beijing, this has been corrected.
