Mifan or Mafan: Mr. Chips

By That's Beijing, August 8, 2019

Mr. Chips is a casual joint specializing in the British staple: fish and chips. Located on the second level of The Crib, the decor is dark and basic. The modest menu covers all the British classics, including Scotch eggs (RMB38) and Eton mess (RMB38), an English dessert made with meringue, berries and whipped vanilla cream.

We opt for the main draw and choose the striped sea bass (RMB98), served with a side of hand-cut chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. The flaky meat of the lightly battered fish falls apart effortlessly and the thick chips are hearty and fresh. That’s because Mr. Chips uses organically-sourced potatoes and only the freshest catch from sustainable waters. Though vegans need not stay away: The menu also includes lightly battered tofu (RMB88), served with the aforementioned sides and a vegan tartar sauce made with seaweed.
