It was 2016 when the world’s first street food stall earned a Michelin star in the Singapore edition of the world’s premiere food guide. As a result, many modest eateries that received even just a mention in the guide were propelled to stardom – and Chan Kong Kei is one of those. The small Macau shop specializing in siu mei, the rice-and-roasted-duck combination of the Cantonese tradition, was inducted into the Macau-Hong Kong Michelin guide and expanded elsewhere in Asia, now reaching the Chinese capital.
But while their original shop in Macau has a homely vibe, their newest shop in Sanlitun (you can find one in Shuangjing too) is nestled in the much-less picturesque basement of the Topwin Center. The understated interiors, with neon signs evoking the streets of Macau, do their best to create a feeling of authenticity, but can only achieve so much. Still, their spin-off roasted duck (RMB38-72) remains an outstanding meal – juicy, with a crunchy skin – especially among the surrounding Topwin bubble tea overkill.
