According to official figures, around 200 foreigners have been deported from Beijing this year.

The deportees weren’t all Beijing residents – some were detained in other provinces before they were sent to the capital for exile. Most of the foreigners had entered the country illegally, held illegal visas or had illegal jobs. The majority were from developing countries.

The Beijing Exit-Entry Administration said they regularly checked if foreigners’ certificates were legal and unexpired.

People's Public Security University of China criminal investigation department director Dai Peng said Chinese police will look out for foreigners who are illegally staying, entering or working in the country. Earlier this month, police in the popular Beijing shopping and drinking district Sanlitun launched a crackdown on ‘illegal foreigners’, patrolling the area 24 hours a day.

A British man who made headlines a few weeks ago when he crashed into a woman on his motorcycle in Beijing, was one of those found to be illegally staying in China. He and his father were deported.

Foreigners who have been deported for unqualified or illegal certificates are not allowed to re-enter China for five years after their expulsion.
