Here, a roundup of things we ate and gossiped about this month – for journalism, for research, for you, readers.

With the icy temps dropping even lower, it doesn’t take much to convince me to never leave my apartment. I also have blankets and a semi-working heater to blame for that. (And I still don’t have a proper winter coat, which might be it too.) But as tough as it is, there are a few reasons to brave the outdoors – and those reasons all involve bars and restaurants. Lucky for you readers, we’ve already done the leg work and laid out all the winners from our That's Beijing Food and Drink Awards, so there are really no excuses.

Over at Topwin Center, Beyond Yakitori (winner of Japanese Food of the Year: Editors' Choice) premiered a new winter menu with highlights like hearty salmon tartar and avocado on a grilled baguette, Wagyu short rib sashimi, tiger prawns with mixed mushrooms and salmon ochazuke, a simple rice dish based with a savory broth and grilled salmon filet. Also, lots of sake.

You know what else goes hand-in-hand with this cold weather? Tacos. Not really, but over at Q Mex Taqueria they’ve rolled out a new menu featuring loads of them, along with spicy cheese sausage, grilled lamb chops with roasted corn and rice and quesadillas made with homemade flour tortillas.

If you’re still hungry for more (tacos), El Barrio is leveling up with some weekly specials like half price tacos on Mondays but most importantly – dangerously discounted RMB10 frozen margaritas for the ladies every Wednesday night. Frozen margaritas in the dead of winter? Bold move, El Barrio.

Speaking of bold moves, Slow Boat Brewery is going back to its hutong roots and opening up a taproom right by the Dengshikou subway station. The new space will be smaller than its Sanlitun counterpart but will offer an extended drink menu with cocktails, spirits and wine. Stay tuned.

Beer lovers, that’s not all: Great Leap Brewery recently debuted a new location in Lido, which might just fill the hole in our hearts left by their dearly departed #12 location last year. Expect plenty of seating, 30 beers on tap and a complete list of food offerings – burgers, pizzas, the works. Apparently, Lido is starting to sound like a decent spot for a booze cruise. (Sorry if your New Year’s resolution was to drink less beer.)
