Here, a roundup of things we ate and gossiped about this month – for journalism, for research, for you, readers.
It’s beginning to look a lot like... well, actually it doesn’t look like Christmas at all, but it’s beginning to feel like it. Though that might only be because I’ve watched Love Actually three times since Thanksgiving (OK, four).
As always, there will be more than a few spots to celebrate the very merry season – mostly at swanky ho-ho-hotels (sorry) – so keep an eye out for our handy guide on our website.
Until then, there are plenty of winter menus and seasonal treats to be enjoyed. Speaking of treats, Hutong’er Pie is back (sort of) and baking for the holidays. After closing their doors this year, the beloved pie shop is temporarily running via WeChat (just search for their name or scan the QR code) and taking Christmas orders starting December 1. Choose from apple, pecan and pumpkin.
Baby, it’s pho-reezing outside (again, sorry) so swing by Rollbox, where they’re now serving hot, steaming bowls of pho. Migas Mercado is also turning up the heat with their new winter menu featuring dishes like roast suckling pig, with mushrooms and artichokes, and hearty chicken and black truffle meatballs in creamy mushroom soup.
Over at Slow Boat, they’ll have their annual spiced Safe Harbor Christmas Ale on tap – infused with clove, cinnamon and dried orange peel – making your holidays a bit hoppier. (I should probably ask Santa for a better sense of humor.)
More good news: Furongji, a hip new dim sum joint by The Orchid, is operating in soft opening mode on Baochao Hutong. No joke – a new spot in Gulou. Talk about a Christmas miracle. Stay tuned for our full review.
Happy holidays!
