US vice president Joe Biden arrived in Beijing Wednesday for talks amid rising tension in the East China Sea after the Chinese government declared an Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku islands last month.
Biden was warned by the Chinese press, which has been breathlessly republishing the jingoistic (and almost certainly astroturfed) essay 'You are nobody without the motherland' all week, not to repeat "erroneous remarks" he made during a state visit to Tokyo, where he reaffirmed US support for Japan.
During his visit, Biden will attend an official welcome ceremony in Beijing's Great Hall of the People and visit Zhongnanhai, where he will meet with Xi Jinping and premier Li Keqiang, as well as vice president Li Yuangchao.
Biden has promised to raise US concerns over the ADIZ "in great specificity" when he meets with the Chinese leadership. The US politician's visit comes just after British prime minister left the capital. David Cameron was in Beijing to, among other things, promote Chinese investment in the UK's planned high speed rail network.
