Generation Gap: What Do You Think of China's Big, Pink Parking Spots for Women

'Generation Gap' is a monthly series where we ask two Beijingers from two different generations their thoughts on a random issue. This time we ask Duan, 22, and Zhang, 35, about China's extra-large, pink parking spots for women.

What do you think about the pink, extra-large parking spots for women that have recently popped up in some cities in China?

Duan, 22

“The most important part isn’t the color. If it’s a larger space, there’s more leeway for female drivers to park, so they might feel more confident about parking. I think that guys are naturally skilled at driving. I don’t think girls are worse drivers, of course, but skills improve with practice and girls probably don’t drive as much as boys. But I do think that women like the color pink, and marking the spot pink clearly shows where the larger space is and so women will be more inclined to park there.”

Zhang, 35

“I don’t think it’s necessary. Everyone has to take a test when they sit their driver’s license, so everyone has the same driving ability. Men and women are equal now. In fact, I think women are even more skilled than men! [laughs] And regarding the special color, even though I’m a woman, I don’t like the color pink.
