The February 2018 issue of That's Beijing is out now – paper-and-ink form citywide, digital pdf form right here or in your browser here. Editor-in-Chief Noelle Mateer introduces the magazine:
I don't ski. I always thought you had to be crazy to willingly spend all day outside in the winter. I became certain of this last month, when, on the coldest day of the year (-20 degrees Celsius!), I stood on top of a mountain in Zhangjiakou's Chongli county, for this month's cover story.
I'm not the only shivering newbie on Hebei's slopes. China is currently experiencing a snow sports boom of colossal proportions, and this is especially true in the rural county of Chongli, which will host several Olympic events in 2022. Just 10 years ago, most residents were farmers – but now, the area is fast becoming an international skiing hub. I went to Chongli to ask residents: How does it feel to watch your home transform? Are you, like, cool with all this?
If you can't wait until 2022, Dominic Ngai has put together a guide to athletes to watch in this month's Olympics in South Korea (p. 48).
Elsewhere in the magazine:
Dominic interviews the creator of new documentary Africans in Yiwu (p. 10);
Erica Martin chats with Chinese indie rockers in honor of influential label Maybe Mars' 10th anniversary (p. 28);
And Dominique Wong explores the Chinese origins of ramen (yes, really, p. 54).
Happy Spring Festival,
Noelle Mateer
